Uganda’s Big game.

Hippopotamus are the second largest land animals in the world, only eclipsed in size by the elephants and easily seen in most of Uganda’s lakes& rivers, since it’s their habitat. They are the third heaviest animals in the world after elephants & rhinos.

When it comes to diet,Hippos can eat upto 150 pounds(about 75 kgs) of food, which is primarily grass, in day. They feed on grass, herbivores that they are,and can quite easily strip their habitat down to bubble.

Habitat wise, they are semi-aquatic.They spend their time both on land and in water, but cannot swim;they mostly just keep bouncing off the bottom of the water.Day time for Hippos is spent in water to shield from the sun.Their bodies produce a natural sun screen.

Sometimes thought to be related to pigs,Hippos are actually related to whales and porpoises.

Hippos have an average lifespan of 40 to 50 years and their physical growth stops at about 25 years of age.And being semi-aquatic,they mate and give birth in water.

Hippos in groups called pods. They usually comprise of males, females and their young.Just like cows, male hippos are called bulls, the females called cows and the young ones called calves.

Hippos are considered to be one of the most dangerous species in the world. It is best to keep a distance if on foot and near a hippo.
